*A Note From DDIB: This week, we would like to introduce you to Lori Ward from Risky Beads. This Diva creates the most fabulous, out-of-this-world-beautiful accessories!! They are "accessories with issues", as she says. Hope you'll enjoy reading more about Lori. (Psst...by the way...she is participating in our May Divalicious Sample Boxes campaign, so be sure to pick up a box when they go on sale - Tuesday, May 12!)

FEATURED DIVA INTERVIEW
- with Lori Ward from Risky Beads

Tell us a little about yourself:

I'm 40, single, have 2 precocious cats that I adore and conduct all of my creative adventures in a one bedroom apartment that on most days is ready to burst at the seams in Raleigh, NC. I grew up in NC, went to school at UNC-Chapel Hill and stayed in the Triangle area after I graduated with a BA in Education. I spent 10 years of my life working with children ages 0-5. I write constantly so when that pot starts to cool down, I switch gears to Risky Beads, and then back again. I quite literally play musical chairs in my head.

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

Risky Beads, well, it's all in the tagline: accessories with issues. If my brain were a museum, Risky Beads would be the gift shop. I sell a variety of jewelry--mostly earrings, bracelets, and pendants, but they all come with 'baggage.' I often feel like I deal in permanent sentiment. When you purchase a piece from my shop, you get more than a piece of a jewelry, you get the thought or story behind it. I also do custom work for people who already have a sentiment in mind.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

I sell nursing necklaces for nursing moms and designed The Nurse Purse in July 2008 for moms who are on the go. The final product is a collaboration between myself and Jenny Nguyen of jennyndesigns. She makes the bags for me. Each Nurse Purse comes with special offers from other Etsy sellers who cater to moms and babies!

My specialty is my Leftovers Series. It started a few months after I opened my shop in 2007 when I realized I had beads that when combined looked exactly like Sweet Potato Casserole. I made Potato Salad after that. After that, I just kept going because it was so much fun. The challenge is (in most cases) to see how close my piece can come to an actual dish. I get a huge kick out of that whether anyone buys the piece or not. I love it.

Here is an example of "3 Bean Salad"...

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

My nursing necklaces are targeted to nursing moms and I also have a children’s line called Risky KIDS. The rest of my inventory is for all age groups.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

I didn’t really set out to start a business per se; I just set out to experiment a little and have some fun, but I’m a bit of an obsessive perfectionist, so it was a little impossible for me not to follow up with marketing and merchandising. In other words, I’m too afflicted to just have fun. LOL.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

Well, it sure ain’t the economy. I think it’s new ideas. It’s cleaning up my studio and finding some beads that I’ve had forever and then realizing that they are perfect for lettuce!

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

Launching the Nurse Purse. I took that idea from concept to fruition and my little purses are now sold in an online European boutique as well. That was pretty cool.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

Learning how to photograph jewelry. That took me a long time, and I’m still learning new things.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

Commitment, perseverance, and a sprinkling of insanity. I wrote a little book about my adventure if you want to know more….

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

I need to go to the gym. I tend to keep the other goals to myself. I’m sort of a close to the vest person about things like that.

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business?

If you’re in this business, the handmade life, my advice to everyone would be focus on your photos and your shop appearance first and foremost. If your photos aren’t top notch and/or your banner is out of focus or pixilated, you’re shooting yourself in the foot and trying to limp to the finish line. Fix your foot!

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

A strawberry/banana/raspberry smoothie, lots of liberal-media-biased news and cats zonked out next to me.

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

To be honest, I was a very solitary child by nature. I think that’s why my imagination is so, well, unhinged. I spent most of my time listening to the radio when I was little. I think most of my ‘role models’ were Elton John, Barry, Rod Stewart, Carly Simon, the Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, and the Bee Gees. Anyone who was on Top 40 radio in the seventies wove themselves into my psyche. Oh, and Steely Dan. I love Steely Dan.

Give us three (3) words that best describe YOU:

1. Obsessive.
2. Creative.
3. Determined.

Give us one (1) word that best describes your business:

1. Quirky.

What is your favorite quote, line or saying?

I can see clearly now; the rain is gone. –from the song by the same name, Johnny Nash

Featured Diva Interview ~ with Shi from Shi Jewels

Introducing our newest Featured Diva...

Name: Shi.
Etsy Shop: Shi Jewels ~ Jewelry for the Goddess in You

Tell us a little about yourself:

I'm a 37 year old mother of twin teenage boys who are seniors in high school. I'm often a lap to 2 Great Danes and 3 cats. I started making jewelry after two things happened to me, an injury from a car accident, and one of my favorite bracelets broke. I work part time at a local credit union and at night I live my dream by creating jewelry.

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

I make jewelry using precious metals and natural stones. My hope is that my jewelry brings out the ever present beauty of the Goddess found within each of us. Representing femininity, beauty and the divine of being a Woman. Nature has provided us with such a wonderful gift and creating these pieces is just my way of showing my appreciation for them.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

Though I don't state it in my store, most of my pieces are OOAK, so I don't often make duplicates. That being said, I don't necessarily have a "bestseller" so to speak, but the items that sell the most are earrings and necklaces. My specialty is creating pieces for a specific purpose using the metaphysical properties of the stones that I work with.

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

I'd like to think that all ages can wear my jewelry, but I understand that everyone's tastes are different so that's why I offer the ability to create custom pieces as well. I also offer a "Petite Line" for those of us who love to adorn our ears but don't necessarily want a lot of length or weight. I've just recently sold my last piece so that'll be my next project.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

After a car accident that left me with a lower back injury and an extreme cut in hours at work, I needed something to try and supplement my loss of income. I'm not even sure how I found Etsy, I think I was just browsing the internet and found it. It has been the best thing that's ever happened to me.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

You mean aside from the stockpile of gemstones that keep spilling over my workspace? *smiles* I love what I do, I love the beauty of a finished piece, and the smile or the appreciation of the person who's just received it in the mail. I'm a woman who loves shiny baubles, it's not hard to stay motivated with so many pretty things surrounding me.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

Personally, my greatest achievement has been raising two accomplished and very caring young men. Business wise I'd have to say my greatest achievement has been reaching 100 sales right before my 1 year Etsy Anniversary. I can't even tell you how happy I was...I know as soon as I saw it I did a happy dance!

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

I would say organizing my time. Between my day job, family and my jewelry business I've really had to sit down and figure out what will work for me. With my back I can't do things for long periods of time so I have to be mindful of what takes priority. It wasn't easy at first, but I think I finally have a system down that works not only for me, but my family as well.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

I'd say the most important thing that you can do is customer service. I can't emphasize this enough! How you treat your customers can definitely make or break you. If you as a seller and business owner are pleasant to deal with and go above and beyond to make sure your customers are happy, they will Remember, Return and Refer...I like to call this the 3 R's (these are the three things that I always keep in mind). Remember that they are contributing to the success of your business so be thankful, be courteous, be polite and make sure that they know how appreciative you are that they chose "You" to purchase from.

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

Well I've just started working with my torch and trying my hand at soldering, so hopefully I'll have some fun new pieces to list soon. I'm also working on getting an actual studio in my house, this will allow me to have one central location for all of my tools, supplies and packaging materials. I'm so excited at the prospect of having my own space to create.

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?

If you love what you do, it'll be successful. Don't get down on yourself if your items don't sell right away, stay vigilant in listing new items or relisting old ones. Fine tune your techniques and create away! It won't always be easy, but if you keep striving to reach your goal it'll happen.

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

Snuggled up on the couch, under a warm blanket with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

I'd have to say my mom. She is always so creative. The one thing I remember most is, growing up we didn't have a lot of money, and we moved to a new town where everyone wore the top of the line clothes. Fearful that I'd be made fun of, my mom went to some garage sales gathered some of those name brands, bought material, duplicated them and attached the tags to the new pieces of clothing. No one at school knew the difference! She never wanted us to go without, so she did what she had to do to make sure we didn't, even if it meant she went without. We got our drivers licenses at the same time, she even scored better than I did and 5 years ago she finally became an American citizen. She's an amazing woman, and the absolute definition of a mom. I love her so much and I will always be greatful for her.

Give us three (3) words that best describe YOU:

Give us one (1) word that best describes your business:

What is your favorite quote, line or saying?

I get knocked down, but I get up again, never gonna keep me down.

I would say woman 23-60 years old enjoy my jewelry. Especially woman in their 30's and 40's.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

Thinking about going back work:) I also want to have a family and would like it if Tumbleweed could support us. I want to be able to live in Mexico half the year and I could do that with my business. Also fashion and trends really inspire me. Fall fashion especially.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

Being able to support myself through Etsy, my website and my wholesale accounts.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

I come from a long line of entrepreneurs and that was always inspiring. My Grandma was always creating and she was the first person I ever made jewelry with.

Featured Diva Interview ~ with Lynae Straw from Panopoly Creations

Introducing Our Featured Diva: Lynae Straw from Panopoly Creations. Hope you will enjoy our interview...

Tell us a little about yourself:

I'm 23 years old and hail from San Francisco, CA. I love to cook, draw, decorate my apartment, explore abandoned places and wilderness areas, and go thrift shopping--that is, when I'm not making new things, researching, vending at local events, updating my website, marketing, or shipping out orders!

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

I create a variety of stoneware ceramic items such as jewelry, housewares, and crafting supplies. My work is united by a common palette of delicious colors and a strong naturalistic aesthetic. I like to stamp little words and phrases on my items, and construct things using unconventional methods.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

My most popular items right now would have to be my Poem Drop Pendants--little ceramic droplets stamped with snippets of classic poetry.

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

I think that people of all ages can enjoy the whimsy and simple beauty of my work, but I tend to market toward my own ages group (people in their 20's and 30's) because it's the market I know best.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

I think my dad had to be my biggest inspiration. He started his own company when I was 4, out of frustration with the many mismanaged companies he'd worked for. He instilled me with an independent spirit and a passion for doing what I love.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

I have a strong, unfailing drive to work on my own terms. Whenever I'm having a hard day, feeling either overworked or like I'm underachieving (I vacillate between the two) I just think about how much happier I am working for myself rather than for someone else who doesn't care about my own goals or aspirations.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

My biggest challenge has to be the fact that I started from scratch. Although I was experienced with my materials and am a quick learner, when I started my business I knew next to nothing about accounting, recordkeeping, proper organization, or for that matter, how to use the kiln I had just bought! I have been learning as I go, and I'm just grateful that the internet is such a neverending resource for small business owners!

What do you believe makes a business successful?

I think it's important to be passionate about your product and about making your customers happy. A successful business is always trying to improve on itself, to find something that it can make better--even if it's something small.

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

My current goal is to be completely supporting myself with my work.

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?

Etsy's not going to make you instantly successful and you're not going to get discovered by the masses unless you work for it. The key is to make people notice you. Make lots of contacts and friends. Take advantage of every opportunity to get your name out there, especially if it doesn't cost you anything besides time. You never know when it will pay off!

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work.

I love to curl up under a blanket and watch an episode or two of Star Trek while munching on some fresh popcorn!

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

My grandmother was a big inspiration to me. She raised seven children and then, when the youngest was in high school, went back into the working world and became an organic chemistry professor. I always admired how she managed to balance all her different commitments so (seemingly) effortlessly.

Give us three words that best describe YOU:

eclectic, lighthearted, passionate

Give us one word that best describes your business:

whimsical

If i'm in NYC, it would be walking aimlessly taking it all in, visiting a museum or gallery, a bit of shopping (of course!)then off to Teany- my favorite tea shop in Manhattan for some afternoon tea with my hubby and friends!

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

Featured Diva Interview ~ with Nicole from Cottonwood Herbals

*A Note From DDIB: We love Cottonwood Herbals. The shop is amazing! It's hard to decide which product we want most. It's a toss up between the Peppermint Sugar Scrub and the Almond Soap. Being the spoiled gals that we are...we'll take both. LOL.

Nicole strives to create products that are top quality. She is to be admired for her work and for "Changing The World...One Lather At A Time!" Read the interview to learn more about her...(and be sure to take note of the name that belongs to her English Bulldog. So cute! LOL.)

INTRODUCING OUR FEATURED DIVA....
Name: Nicole
Shop: Cottonwood Herbals
Shop url: www.cottonwoodherbals.etsy.com

Tell us a little about yourself:

I'm a mother to two children ages 17 years old and 7 years old..oh, and to an English bulldog named Diva. After many years of working sometimes 2 jobs and being a single mother, I met the love of my life. I'm finally able to do something I love. I always had the belief that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. And it's true!!

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

My company offers handmade cold process soaps, herbal salves, lipbalms, luscious bath scrubs and more. I only use the best ingredients I can find, organic whenever possible. The whole idea of my shop is to offer products that are wonderful and not filled with chemicals. To offer a happy medium for a customer who is looking for a healthier alternative, who wants to learn about nature and herbs.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

My best sellers are my Lavender Castile soap and my Calendula soap, which has organic calendula petals in it...yeah, it's beautiful and refreshing. The bath scrubs are incredibly popular as well. I offer these in many scents including letting the customer choose the scent. These are custom made for the customer. Fresh, moisturizing and gentle on the skin.

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

My items are for everyone! Gentle soaps and healing herbal salves that everyone can and should use. Skin is the largest organ in our bodies - we need to respect that and be careful what goes on it.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

I had been making my soaps, cleaners and own laundry soap for years due to my daughter having severe eczema. I did not want to use steroid creams on her and decided I would try going back to nature first. Get rid of the chemicals and see what happens. It worked and after losing my job last year during the mortage melt down mess, my husband asked me what I wanted to do. That was easy - I said I wanted to help people stop bathing in chemicals. There had to be an alternative and one that wasn't all patchouli and hippies. I mean, hey, I like designer clothes and bags as much as the next girl - but that doesn't mean I have to harm my body for beauty. That's where I come in.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

As a woman with children, I believe in living my life as a way for them to learn. It's a lot of hard work and being incredibly organized. We go on "weed walks" to learn about plants, we garden to learn how to grow our own food. I love learning...and helping others. Motivation? I love nature, the plants, the flowers and with every article that comes out saying how one of the products we all use that was previously thought safe is now deemed "possibly harmful" it makes me want to take the safety of my health into my own hands. Soap is a pretty simple yet incredibly important step to take on the journey to living a better and healthier lifestyle.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

Starting a company with my own money. Taking the risk to believe in my own dreams.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

The hardest part has been learning the different software programs that are used for book keeping, inventory and more.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

I'm selling a product I use and believe in. No hype...just great products. I'm not some slick salesman. I'm just a woman who wants to make products you can feel safe about using.

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

We will be expanding in a couple of weeks and really concentrating on our wholesale side of things. I'd like to be in grocery and health food stores. Affordable luxury so to speak. As I say...I'm out to Change the World...One Lather at a Time!

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?

Test your products and know them inside and out! If you love the product you are selling - it's easy. Customers can tell!

Be organized from day 1!! Believe in yourself and success will come.

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

Lock the bathroom door, throw on some music and take a nice, long bath - using Cottonwood Herbals products of course.

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

I've always liked women who did things on their own terms...Audrey Hepburn, Ani DiFranco...heck, even Cinderella went after her dream.

Give us three (3) words that best describe YOU:

Give us one (1) word that best describes your business:

Featured Diva Interview - with Kim from kimsmissprissy

*A Note From DDIB: What a darling shop! Why, just the name alone makes you smile.:-) Believe us....you (and your little ones too) will fall head over heels in love with the "girly things for girly girls" that Kim offers in her shop. Enjoy the interview and be sure to bookmark her site.

*** INTRODUCING OUR FEATURED DIVA ***

Name: Kim Austin
Etsy Shop: kimsmissprissy
Etsy Shop url: www.kimsmissprissy.etsy.com

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am married with three children 1 son 18, 1 daughter 14, 1 daughter 6. I am a 6th grade Science and Social Studies Teacher and have been teaching for 14 years. I love spending time crafting or reading.

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

I have a small business that is slowly growing. I started out selling to my friends that wanted hairbows for their daughters and slowly developed from there. I then did a few craft shows and currently wholesale items to a local children's boutique. I have been setting up my online store and website, missprissybows.com, and it should be up and running in the next week or so. Currently my shop focuses on hairbows, clippies, ponytail streamers, and burp cloths. I make my bowboards and bulletin boards as ordered (customized). I have recently added a few embroidery items like the acrylic beverage bottles, key rings, and desktop pencil holders. I also have added a few pet items as well, such as the acrylic monogrammed pet bowl and personalized bandanas.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

My hairbows are the heart of my business and sell steadily throughout the year. One of my most popular items would have to be my custom bowboards. These sell like hotcakes during the holiday season! My specialty would have to be the fact that I customize and LOVE IT! It feels so much more personal when you know who you are making something for as you create it. You just seem to put a little more love into those items.

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

Most of my hair accesories are targeted towards girls from 0-18. I do have some items that could be for any age, such as my Ponytail Pizzaz button covered ponytail holders, some clips, and of course the bulletin boards.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. My friends use to laugh at me because I would see something and say..."I could make that!", and would usually try. My youngest daughter is the prissy one and hairbows were a necessity! I decided to learn how to make them myself, and from there people started asking me to make bows for them. It was just perfect to me. Doing something fun and getting paid for it.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

Hmmm..I would have to say that it is one of the few things I do not have to motivate myself to do. I love creating these things and seeing others enjoy them.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

That would have to be raising my three wonderful children. They are the light of my life and I am so proud of all three of them.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

My biggest challenge would be having confidence. Although I make quality items and I would never sell anything I would not buy myself, I still can't believe people want to buy my things. I've had to work really hard to charge what is fair...I've been told I tend to underestimate the value of my product.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

perserverance and a love for what you do

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

For now, I am building my Etsy business and about to launch my online shop. I think that will keep me hopping.

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?

Don't be afraid to do what you love. If you love what you do, it will show in your work and keep you going. Go for it and take life day by day.

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

I LOVE a good nap...but chocolate and a good book work wonders too!

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

My mother was ALWAYS my role model. She raised three girls as a single mom and her work ethic, love, and determination inspire me to this day! She built her way up from a waitress to a restaraunt owner and did it all on her own!

*A Note From DDIB: "Flight attendants please prepare the cabin for landing!"(lol) This week, you will be meeting a diva (and full time flight attendant) who creates custom luggage ID handle wraps that will make your luggage stand out from the rest. You won't have to worry about grabbing the wrong bags in the overhead bin anymore. The perfect solution for all of you travelling divas. By the way, you MUST check out her "Diva" luggage ID handle wrap! We are quite sure that you will loooooove it. We do.:-)

*** INTRODUCING OUR FEATURED DIVA ***

Name: Rita

Shop title: (Bin Hog Designs) - Custom Luggage Handle Wraps

Shop url: www.binhog.etsy.com, www.binhog.com

Tell us a little about yourself:

I work FT as a flight attendant and during my off time I love to watch my boyfriend's kids play in their soccer games, eat sushi, and watch the TV show Deadliest Catch.

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

I make and embroider luggage ID handle wraps. They wrap around your luggage handles and are used to identify your bags.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

My bestsellers are the personalized/custom wraps with names only and designs with names, initials, etc... The custom wraps are my specialty. Probably the most popular items are the Not Yours wraps, as well as the I love wine wrap.

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

I don't target a specific age group, but I definitely target the traveler.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

I work FT as a flight attendant, and I needed a bag tag that didn't just hang off the bag, and one that people would see immediately in the overhead bin. People are constantly grabbing the wrong bags in the bins.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

Getting my products out to the public.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

Getting large orders and shipping out of the country. It's amazing that people have seen & heard of my wraps outside the United States.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

Trying to do too much and please too many people.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

A good product and business plan.

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

I'd like to market more aggresively and get my wraps into airport/gift shops.

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business?

Go for it! Don't worry about what others say or do. Spend time in the forums reading the threads and soak up as much business information as possible.

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

In the hot tub.

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

My Dad. He's an extremely hard worker.

Featured Diva Interview - with Amanda from TackledAndShackled

*A Note From DDIB:Let's end the week with a "getting to know you, getting to know all about you" post!:-) We're excited to introduce you to the diva behind the imaginative and amazing TackledAndShackled shop. Now, admit it...the name "TackledAndShackled" has you super-duper curious, right? (lol) Bet you're wondering what kind of items she sells? Well, read on and find out. If you love UNIQUE...then you'll adore TackledAndShackled.

Name: Amanda

Shop: TackledAndShackled

Shop url: http://TackledAndShackled.etsy.com

Tell us a little about yourself:

I'm a stay at home mom of three spirited kids, ages 13, 6, and 3 (yeah-- we've got The Span...LOL). My husband is a mechanical engineer, but I sometimes think my job is harder! Thus, the monniker TackledAndShackled became the perfect homage to my (much loved) status. I've been crafting pretty much my whole life- growing up poor in a family of 8 helped spark my creativity and love of turning Nothing into Something.

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

My products span many different categories, often blurring the lines from one subject to another. I started out here on etsy doing just jewelry, but quickly branched out into decoupage, collage, ACEO, wall hangings, embroidery, and altered books, among others.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

Interestingly, my bestsellers have been some funky light switch covers adorned with 1946 vintage dictionary pages. I actually just sat down and perused this old, falling-apart dictionary, tearing out the pages which had images that appealed to me, and took it from there. It's both comforting and somewhat alarming that other people 'get' my weird sense of humor! Bats, 18th century public humiliation contraptions, the list goes on and on.

There's 'normal' stuff too-- botanical illustrations of dragonflies and flower species are some of the other selections...) But I've also had great success with altered books-- I recently sold one I'd made from a children's board book. It was all about my favorite species of flower-- poppies. Each page was a unique assemblage tribute to all things poppy, including a complete seed collection of many different types of poppies I'd grown in my own personal garden, and accompanying photos of them in all their glory.

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

For the most part, it spans all ages-- more mature people usually love my jewelry, though I make jewelry for kids as well (and everyone in between.....LOL). I would venture to say that there's really something for everyone.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

Years and years of friends telling me, "You know, you really should be selling this stuff!" Honestly. I was having fun just doing it for myself and as gifts, but admittedly, it's been pretty well received here on etsy! I've only been in business about 5 weeks, and have had 14 sales.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

Realizing that people actually enjoy what I do! Crafting started out as almost a sort of therapy for me (I have 3 kids, after all....LOL). But to know that other people not only like it, but want to buy it? That's an amazing sense of fulfillment right there. It feels good to know that what I do is appreciated. Now for the home front......LOL

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

I cannot express the absolute glee I felt over selling two lengthy labors of love in one single transaction: the person who bought the poppy altered book also bought another one at the same time. Completely different subjects, but both claiming their own space in my heart.
Oh, and getting dinner on the table every once in a while too.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

Finding the balance between home and work;
Finding the dining room table.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

I'm still new, remember, so there's (LOL) a lot of room for error. However, I really think that you have to love what you do, and seek out others who will fill that niche. I don't think you can be successful in any sense, doing something you don't like. It has to feel good.

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

One step at a time.....

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?

Don't wait so long! I had all sorts of clouds in my head.... "too much trouble"...."how do I set up a paypal?" yada yada yada. Just do it. I wish I'd started a lot sooner. It's so simple. Yes, it takes a great deal of time-- especially in the beginning-- but it's such an amazing experience. Do it already!!! And everybody starts out slow, sales wise, but don't give up. Promote, promote, promote. Use whatever you have at your disposal: myspace, facebook, flickr, AND USE THE FORUMS!!! So many sellers are also buyers! (Myself included!) Make your presence! Show your stuff!

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

Wine is nice.

hahahahahahahaha

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

She didn't seem so impressive at the time (forgive me) but I can honestly say my mom. She was a stay at home mom of 6 kids, and taught me how to do most everything I know. I have an entirely different appreciation for her, now that her wish of me having "a child just like me" has come true.

Featured Diva Interview - with Amanda from Oh Mandie!

*A Note From DDIB: What a fun and exciting Etsy shop Amanda has! Drop by for a visit. We know you'll love what you see. :-)

Name: Amanda

Etsy Shop title is: Oh Mandie!

Etsy Shop url: http://OhMandie.etsy.com

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am a stay at home mom of two wonderful, rowdy little boys ages 5 and 21 months. I've been paper crafting and jewelry making for about 5 years now, sparked from a love of scrapbooking and collecting beautiful beads. My amazingly supportive husband understands that buying endless amounts of paper and beads is a necessity of life rather than just an obsession. Together we all live with our little white ball of kitty fur, Percy, who is seriously insane... as far as a cat goes anyhow.

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

My slogan "Papercrafting and Beadwork Mixed With Life" pretty much sums it all up. I make handbound journals and other paper goods and whimsical jewelry. I like to make things that inspire people to be more creative and unique in their everyday lives

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

I sell alot of matchbook notepads in assorted designs, but my most popular and favorite to make are the journals. I went to college for creative writing, and there is something to magical about a blank piece of paper!

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

Not at all, just those who are light-hearted

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

My children. I've been an avid paper and bead horder since as long as I could remember. I've also been a wife and a mom for as long as I can remember too and I wanted to do something that was mine all mine and that exemplified who I was as an individual and what it was was that I liked to do. And the rest is history!

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

Motivation isn't really necessary when you do something that you truely love doing. Its a gift to be able to sit down at my workspace and craft. Its relaxing and inspiring.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

Just maintaining my love for the craft and not getting too caught up in what is or isn't selling and how often. I'm doing what makes me happy and that is always a blessing.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

Exposure! I'm a busy gal and self promotion isn't always an easy feat to achieve. Sometimes its easy to get lost in the crowd and I do still struggle with finding new and unique ways to make myself and my products seen.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

A true and insatiable love for what it is that you do. I don't measure my business' success in terms of sales or dollar signs, but rather the hours spent enjoying myself, the amazing friends I've made through etsy, and the self discovery I've achieved through my shop and at craf shows

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

Continue to grow as a business, evolve, and find more success - both personal and professional

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?

Go For It!! Its a great journey, and the people that you meet along the way are fabulous. Stay true to your work and who you are as a person and you can't lose.

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

A nice hot shower, followed by a wonderful nights sleep curled up in bed. Have to recharge that brain!

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

My dad for sure. His work ethic is amazing. He also is a small business owner. After working for someone for most of his life he bit the bullet, with a family in tow, and started his own resturant equipment repair business. He's happy, self-employed, and sucessful. If I could strive to be half of the person that my father is then I know that I will have truely succeeded in my life

Featured Diva Interview - With Morgan From Morgan's Unique Wearable Art

*A Note From DDIB: Morgan's "wearable art" is just as unique and special as she is!:-) Learn more about this creative diva and her magnificent work...

INTRODUCING OUR FEATURED DIVA

Name: Morgan

Etsy Shop title is: Morgan's Unique Wearable Art

Etsy Shop url: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5133850

Tell us a little about yourself:

Retired teacher. Been working with dyes since the late 1960's, when it was "groovy". Now work fulltime in my home studio.

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

My main concentration is on unique paintings on silk scarves of all weights and sizes. I also paint on clothing when I have the time, and have started designing one-of-a-kind silk neckties for men as well.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

Each is unique; I do not repeat designs. Seems like I cannot keep poppy designs in my shop, probably because of the deep contrasts. I have sold every one I have ever done, no two alike. In fact, I need to do more but forgot all about them!
My specialty is stonewashed heavyweight crepe de Chine--I adore playing with the way it diffuses colors.

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

Seems like the only people who can afford to treat themselves are professional women. I do a lot of gifts, though. Women will spend money on other before they will on themselves, unfortuntately.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

Too many scarves, plus this is what I have always wanted to do. I had to wait a long time to do it, and subsequently was SO ready when I retired.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

I have never had a problem with this. I have too many ideas and not enough time and energy. I try to do a new painting every day, and design in my head all day and night. sometimes my ideas wake me up at 3 AM and I go down to my studio and work until the idea is finished.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

Being chosen as an Etsy Featured Seller-- last May.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

Promoting. And because I refuse to do shows where I have to set up and have people walk by and perhaps "touch my stuff" limits my venues.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

I have no idea. I would like to think it is quality and customer service, because that is what I focus on.....but I have a feeling that there is a lot of luck and $ involved, too.

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

I just want to be able to sell every single piece of work that I list. Pretty simple!

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?

Read the rules. Check out the competition. Do your best, and show no fear.

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

READ! I read and re=read the classics-- I get an enormous boost from reading great literature, and re=read often. Right now it's Willa Cather. Stick to the art!

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

I can't remember-- it was way too long ago! My father was an Iwo Jima survivor, and I idolized him all his life. He understood me and never nagged me or forced me to explain myself. I miss him.

Featured Diva Interview: With Cherie From Glitterbug Originals

*A Note From DDIB: We've decided to post two Featured Diva Interviews on our blog today and there are many more to be posted in the coming days and months. Right now, let's meet Cherie. She is a very talented lady who creates the most adorable jewelry you've ever seen! (we especially love Cherie's cupcake earrings...soooo cute!) Hope you'll enjoy the interview...

Name: Cherie Smith

Etsy Shop title is: Glitterbug Originals

Etsy Shop url: http://www.GlitterbugOriginals.etsy.com/

Tell us a little about yourself:

I'm a 44 year old stay-at-home mom in Southeast Missouri, married to a great guy for 11 years. We have one daughter, Sophie, who's 8 and calls herself Baby Glitterbug--she's my apprentice and helps me decide what to make next. :-)

I've always loved jewelry, the sparklier and more colorful the better, since I was very little, and can remember begging my grandma to let me JUST LOOK at her big pile of beaded necklaces......of course I couldn't resist trying on a few when her back was turned! he he he! I'd been collecting jewelry, both vintage and modern for quite some time when I discovered lampwork jewelry a few years ago. I bought a lot of pieces, but became very interested in learning to make them myself about 2 years ago, and have never looked back. I love everything about it: searching for the best, most beautiful lampwork art glass beads I can find, developing relationships with the bead artists and working with them to make custom shapes and colors for my designs, making the jewelry, and getting to know my customers, many of whom I absolutely adore and am great friends with.

I've participated in a couple of art shows and have sold my pieces in a few local shops, but I've really concentrated on my Etsy store up 'til now. I would be interested in doing more art shows, though.

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

This is strictly a home business! I've claimed one of the bedrooms in our house and call it my office. I have a big old oak desk with my PC + printer and other business-related stuff, and a work table (nearly buried in beads, crystals, and other jewelry-making accoutrements) where I both make my jewelry and pack it to ship off to the new owners.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

Well, 99.9% of my things are made with art glass beads and Swarovski crystals and pearls. I do use some gemstones, too, and also freshwater pearls. I guess I really specialize in earrings......I make necklaces and bracelets as well, but because they don't sell as quickly as the earrings, I just don't make as many of them. Some really popular items right now are the Sugar Skull earrings--I think because Day of the Dead and Halloween are coming up soon. I sell lots of earrings made with beautiful floral beads, and also the cupcake earrings are popular.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

I've always been sort of "crafty" and have done lots of different projects--I love to experiment with cooking, to sew, and I love refinishing and recovering old furniture (just simple things--I can't reupholster anyone's couch!). But I just love the glass beads so much--they fascinate me and I can't seem to get enough of them or stop playing with them! :-) I didn't really get into this intending for it to be a business--only a hobby. But it's an expensive hobby--there are so many components that go into a single piece and the best prices are in quantity buys--so I started making a few pieces to sell, hoping to support my own jewelry habit! And when they started to sell, I was hooked. :-)

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

My daughter, for one thing! She loves the jewelry as much as I do, and is always so enthusiastic when I show her the newest bead arrivals and my finished pieces. And then my customers do, as well. It's always such a compliment to me when someone buys one of my pieces, and then writes to tell me how much they're enjoying wearing them. I LOVE the idea that I've made something that other people have worn and loved. :-)

What do you believe makes a business successful?

I think that good customer service is by far the most important thing about being in business. I try really hard to please my customers. I also think that it's really important to believe in yourself and what you're doing. I make the kind of jewelry that I'd like to wear, myself. And I try to treat my customers the way I'd like to be treated.

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

Honestly, I'm still taking this one day at a time! I'd love to have a brick and mortar shop, but it takes me quite a while to finish a single piece, and I'm not sure I could pay the rent on the income I'd bring in. :-) So as far as goals are concerned, I think that the most I'm hoping for at this point is that more people become aware of my Etsy store, and that more people will come to value handmade goods. And then there are new techniques and skills that I'd like to learn. I live in a small town and there aren't really any classes being give on beadwork. I'm completely self-taught, and expect that any new things I'll learn I'll have to teach myself or learn through books and the internet.

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?

First of all, research the business of what you want to make--who else is making it and selling it (on Etsy and elsewhere)? Is there anyone? If so, what are their prices and how much are they selling? And then most importantly: How can you make yours different/better? Once you're clear on all that, then go for it! Etsy is a wonderful website. My experiences there have been 99.9999% positive.

Tell us the best way to relax after a busy day of work..

I love spending time with my family, and I love to shop! But neither are particularly relaxing. ;-) My favorite way to relax is to plop onto the sofa with a good book. :-) I also listen to a lot of audio books while I'm working--much more interesting than the tv or radio. :-)

While growing up, who was your role model? Who impressed and inspired you most?

My mother was a wonderful seamstress and I'm so glad I was able to watch her make lovely things and be taught that I could, too. I guess that's kind of boring, but it's the truth. :-)

Featured Diva Interview - with Suzanne from Charmed By Suzanne

* A Note From DDIB: Hey everyone! Hope you'll enjoy our very first interview with an Etsy seller. Check out her "charming" shop. We know you'll love it.:-)

INTRODUCING OUR FEATURED DIVA:

Name: Suzanne

Etsy Shop title is: Charmed By Suzanne

Etsy Shop url: http://www.CharmedBySuzanne.etsy.com/
Website: http://www.CharmedBySuz.com/

Tell us a little about yourself:

I work full-time in public relations, but being crafty is my real passion. My shop has been open for three years. I live in Denver and love attending wine tasting events. Some people eat at their breakfast bar and dining room table, but both of mine are covered - one with my beads and the other with my card supplies. Good thing I live alone :)

Give us a description of your business and the items that you offer:

Handcrafted wine charms and wine bottle gift cards. I've even started to offer a few sets of Charmed By Suzanne earrings after people requested them for their young daughters. I offer the most elegant wine charms you'll find anywhere. I use Swarovski crystals in many of my sets and use a variety of specialty beads. My wine bottle gift cards double as gift enclosure cards. I've had customers tell me that after giving a bottle of wine to someone with one of my cards, for the first time, they actually received a thank you note. It helps your bottle stand out in a pack (like at a housewarming party) and adds a special touch.

What are your bestsellers? Your specialty? Most popular items?

Best sellers - dog themed wine charms for sure! People love their dogs. I have sets for different breeds and do custom orders. I also sell "Thanks for dog sitting" wine bottle gift cards. During the holidays, my Jewish-themed wine charms sell out quickly. Everyone has Christmas charms, but it's harder to find wine charms for other holidays. My customers really appreciate that.

Are your items targeted toward a specific age group?

To everyone who likes wine or entertaining (of age, of course!) Most of my customers are 25 and up.

What inspired you to start your own indie business?

I've always been crafty and wanting to sell my wares. But I actually took the plunge and opened my business after purchasing some wine charms are a craft show, getting them home and thinking to myself, I can do this better. So I did.

As an independent business woman, what keeps you motivated?

Hope and the potential of growing my business. My motivation surges when I do a show or get positive feedback from people.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement thus far?

Having six wine shops and boutiques that sell my products in Denver.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business woman?

Starting from scratch and teaching myself along the way. Everything from setting up a website to obtaining a sales tax license was a lot of work, but so rewarding.

What do you believe makes a business successful?

Determination and enthusiasm.

Do you have any specific goals/plans for the future?

I'm determined to increase my website traffic and network like crazy to do it.

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for women out there who may be considering starting their own business on Etsy?
